Help your child understand the difference between wants and needs through simple, fun lessons about value and saving.

Before children ever hold a dollar, they can begin to understand what value means. Value isn’t just about cost — it’s about how long something lasts, how much joy it brings, and how it helps us grow.

Start with examples they can touch. A gold-colored coin may feel heavy and precious, while a plastic toy may break in a day. Ask, “Which one lasts longer?” or “Which one will you still care about next week?”

Needs vs. Wants

When grocery shopping or online browsing, show them the difference between a need and a want. Say:

  • “We need food.”

  • “We want candy.”

Visual lessons like this build early awareness.
